Travelled to the Admiralty Islands to hunt coastal brown bear in April, 2014. Until now I had killed everything with my trusty Steyr Scout in .308 Win (including everything from deer and black bear to lion and bison). In every case I ised Federal ammo with Trophy Bonded Tip. I won’t use anything else — the ones I’ve recovered (not many) looked like marketing photos. So when the gude insisted that I borrow or buy something at least .375 Mag, I bought a Kimber in .458 Lott and bought Federal ammo with Trophy Bonded tip bullets. The first shot, at 143 yards, visibly staggered the bear–something I did not expect, and was even more surprised at when I later walked up and saw how big he was. To stagger something this big takes a hell of a shock. At the guide’s insistence(they hate chasing a wounded bear through the woods), I emptied the magazine (4 shots total), but the guide and my experience (as well as the “autopsy” performed while skinning) confirmed that he was dead bear walking with the first shot. There was massive internal damage and, much to my surprise, total penetration. Didn’t recover a single bullet even though he was enormous (squared 9’3″…his NECK was 33 inches around….you can imagine the bulk of this monster). I’ve hunted with people who are so worried about penetration that they use bullets that just pass right through without doing much damage, and the animal leaves a decent blood trail but takes forever to die (if at all). I want a quick, humane kill. All four bullets went completely through this monster, so there was indeed penetration, but the Trophy Bonded Tips also did enormous damage on the way through. Next time I hunt something big, especially something that has a reputation for attacking the hunter that shoots it, I’m leaving the .308 at home andbringing the Kimber, and I’m loading it with Federal Cape Shock and Trophy Bonded bullets.
